Ex-Cabinet Minister, Government of India and President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Hon’ble Shri Sharad Pawar, son of a farmer, is known for his focused effort, perseverance, in-depth planning, discipline, ability to endure criticism and far-sightedness. These qualities define his remarkable political journey of over 40–45 years.
After Yashwantrao Chavan, Sharad Pawar is recognized as one of the most prominent political figures from the State of Maharashtra.
Born in a farming community in Baramati taluka at Katewadi, his journey from grassroots politics to becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and holding several key portfolios at the Centre stands as an inspiration to millions.
He became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) at the young age of 27 in 1967. He served as a Minister in 1974 and became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 1978. He held this position multiple times in 1988, 1990 and 1993.
Later, he went on to serve as the Defence Minister and held the Agriculture portfolio at the Centre from 2004 to 2014.
Able administration, deep connection with the common man, and an exceptional ability to identify and mentor leadership potential are hallmarks of his political persona. Many leaders who today represent Maharashtra at the national level emerged under his guidance.
The highlights of his political career include initiatives such as increased pension for retired defence officers, orchard development schemes, strengthening of cooperatives, development of the sugar industry, relief work during the Killari earthquake, empowerment of women, upliftment of underprivileged sections, Baramati MIDC, Vidya Pratishthan, Krushi Vikas Pratishthan and Sharadabai Pawar College of Education.
Beyond politics, he has also served as Life Member of the Pune District Education Association, President of Rayat Shikshan Sanstha, and President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
