Pharmacology

Dr. Smita Jagannath Pawar

Head of Department

The Department of Pharmacology focuses on the study of drug action, mechanism of action, therapeutic applications, toxicological evaluation and experimental pharmacology.

The department integrates experimental, clinical and analytical approaches to evaluate drug efficacy and safety. Emphasis is given to novel drug delivery systems, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and advanced analytical method development.

Research Areas:

  • Enhancement of solubility of poorly soluble aqueous drugs/API’s.
  • Development of novel drug delivery systems for antiviral drugs, especially for AIDS treatment.
  • Design of novel drug delivery systems using natural excipients (Ocimum basilicum).
  • Formulation development for colitis and colon cancer therapy.
  • Development of microemulsions and transdermal patches.
  • Taste masking of extremely bitter drugs using ion exchange resins.
  • Formulation and development of floating drug delivery systems.
  • Prediction of formulation properties (in vivo and in vitro) using QSPR.
  • QSAR studies for drug design and optimization.
  • Development and validation of stability-indicating assay methods for APIs using RP-HPLC.
  • Physicochemical characterization of monoclonal antibodies using:
    • Size Exclusion Chromatography
    • Lowry’s Method
    • SDS-PAGE (Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis)
    • UV Spectrophotometry
  • Analytical method development and validation using UPLC / HPLC / HPTLC.
  • Development and validation of RP-HPLC method for estimation of residual glycine in pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
  • Development and validation of biochemical assays for vaccine quality control.
